2018 is fast approaching and I am optimistic.
Are you with me?!
Awesome!!
But before looking ahead, I like taking a little time to reflect. I assess how I’m doing in all of the areas of my life that make me feel whole. And it may surprise you to know that the one gap that stands out is my level of fitness.
As you roll your eyes at me, first understand that each of us is our own harshest critic. As athletes we set the bar higher every chance we get. And I’ve reached some pinnacles to my fitness that I’m proud of. But I’ve also had some lows…usually around injury.
Don’t get me wrong. I don’t take for granted that at 45-years-old, I’m doing better than many at half my age. But that’s not what motivates me. Feeling strong and uninhibited as an athlete does.
Full disclosure, I had some health setbacks that were a major reason why I didn’t feel my best in 2017. I started out the year recovering from a torn biceps. That was followed by several oral surgeries, including removing my tonsils, contributing to my setback in my fitness level.
I spent more time healing and less time in the gym than I wanted. It was a struggle to maintain my strength and conditioning.
Looking back on this, I now have compassion for myself. This realization has freed me of demoralizing self-judgement and guilt about my current fitness. It has given me perspective that allows me to have a clear mind going into the New Year.
In this instance, 2017 was a powerful reminder that health ALWAYS comes first. And that’s what I wanted to share with you.
So moving forward into 2018, aim for the stars. And remember that you can’t shoot a cannon out of a canoe.
It may be cliché, but your health is THE foundation for any goal that you may have…fitness or otherwise.
Wishing you a healthy, happy, and meaningful 2018!
Here’s to your best year ever!
Cheers,
Adam
